Ammonium nitrate
Inorganic chemical compound with the chemical formula –
NH4NO3. It is formed by neutralising nitric acid with ammonia. In agriculture, it is known as granulated nitrogen-based fertilizer, containing 32-34% nitrogen, depending on the manufacturer. In ammonium nitrate, nitrogen comes in two forms: nitrate and ammonium in a 50:50 ratio. This ratio makes ammonium nitrate the most popular and universal nitrogen-based fertilizer.
Ammonium nitrate is also a nitrogen-based fertiliser commonly used on grasslands after every mowing.
When applied for this purpose, special attention should be paid to the availability of water which facilitates nitrogen absorption. On grasslands as well as other crops, ammonium nitrate should be applied on moist soil or immediately before expected rainfall.
In the case of intensive fertilizing with ammonium nitrate, liming must be applied, as ammonium nitrate fertiliser strongly acidifies the soil. To neutralise the acidifying effect of 100 kg of ammonium nitrate, use 68 kg of lime-carbonate fertilizer containing 50% CaO.
